Photovoice is an exciting approach that invites community members to record and reflect on the strengths and concerns within their community through photography.

Volunteers take pictures around a theme or issue. The photos are shared, analyzed, in discussions focused on how individuals want to change their lives and their community.

Photos and stories collected in this approach not only spur discussion, but also can communicate compelling stories to funders, potential volunteers, and community leaders.

Photovoice has proven particularly effective with youth, as shown in Rainbow’s experience with the City Kids Summer Day Camp in North Minneapolis. Rainbow used Photovoice to engage 6- to 12-year-old participants in providing their input on what was working and what could be improved in the program.
